Snow Hares

Due to recent wintry weather conditions it’s been a challenging time in the Peak District National Park running my Mountain Hare workshops while doing my own photography. My clients and I were able to spend some wonderful moments with the Mountain Hares that live in this region of England.

When fresh snow has fallen the Mountain Hares, in their white coats become more confident knowing they can blend in so well. This can work in your favour but you must always remember you’re a guest and respect them if you want to get any chance of getting near them.

We came across this Mountain Hare hunkered down as the snow and high winds battered the landscape. You can see the hare is watching me at all times, they are happy when they see your no threat and don’t offer any need for them to move. If they have to move due to your actions then that will take calories from them.

If that continues and then others did the same the hare then has a large calorie deficit which in the end may cost them their life should they not be able to get enough food in these conditions.

The snow storm passed and the place was covered in beautiful sunlight and blue skies. The Mountain Hare then began cleaning its fur free of snow before settling down again.

We took a few more images, then crawled back out and left the hare as we’d found it. This is the best thing you can ever do, just leave them as you found them.
